The Thompson FamilyEn EspañolChristmas 2006 came early for Mr. Thompson and his sons. It was December 13, 2006 when me met at the Law Firm to sign the purchase documents. Mr. Thompson was a proud home owner!!
Mr. Thompson, a Vietnam Veteran, came from California to start a new life and be near his children. Through family and friends, he heard about The Women’s Center of Fayetteville. He came and applied for the program and had some concerns about his age and his credit. Mr. Thompson is now 59 years old and has something to look forward to for his wife and his two boys ( 15 and 13 years old). It is never too late to start new. With hard work and dedication on both sides Mr. Thompson has proven that it is possible. From the very beginning Mr. Thompson worked on solving his credit issues, attended credit counseling sessions and took several classes that are required; never missed to attend and was always focused and dedicated. And the result shows for itself. A nice 3 bedroom 2 ½ bathrooms, a nice large fenced in yard and even a bonus room that Mr. Thompson and his family use as the entertainment room. Mr. Thompson even got married in the year of 2005. A new life a new beginning in every way. A single father of two had now a home that would be his “own” his children and his wife. The American Dream!
Mr. Thompson is one of 33 clients that have purchased a home. To this date, we are staying in close contact with the clients. Post counseling is very important because for most clients it was the first time in their life to own their own home. The Women’s Center offers this service to all the new home owners. We can only help those people who want to help themselves; those who are willing to attend classes, pay their rent on time, and work on the issues that caused a lot of them to be homeless in the first place. All the properties are located in the Fayetteville and Hope Mills area, not clustered in one area. No one knows the person’s situation when they move into the house, so it makes it nice for them even though they are paying less rent. Each house is inspected thoroughly and if the property has too many construction issues we look elsewhere. By working together with local Banks, Credit Unions, Real Estate Agents and Brokers, the County, City and NC Housing Finance, we were able to provide better assistance to the Lease to Home clients. Most of the Lease to Home clients that have purchased a home received very good interest rates on their mortgage, some even with an interest rate of 5.65 %, which is a great accomplishment for anyone that is looking forward in purchasing a home. The Women’s Center has joined the NC Association of Realtors and the NC Property Management Division to better serve and assist the clients. We are hoping to assist many more families in the years to come. Chris Gonzalez/ Lease to Home Director
